Evonik Cyro Introduces Molding Compound with Enhanced Optical Properties

Evonik Cyro, LLC, (booth #2875) introduces ACRYMID® TT70, a high grade poly(methyl methacrylimide) (PMMI) that combines the inherent advantages of poly(n-methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with enhanced optical properties to deliver distinct performance advantages in high-temperature lighting designs.

Unveiled at LightFair International 2010, ACRYMID® TT70 offers high light transmission, is non-yellowing and has low haze, making it well suited for high efficiency LED-based lighting applications including architectural, automotive, interior design, store fixture and signage.

ACRYMID® TT70 molding compound is developed from a unique Evonik chemistry that allows performance, superior to alternative acrylics, polycarbonates (PC) and heat-resistant PC variants. Its Vicat temperature (a standardized test used to identify the softening point of a thermoplastic material) of 170 °C means that it is perfect for specialty lenses that require the ability to maintain their shape in high-heat environments.

One key feature of the product is that it has low heat age discoloration. ACRYMID® TT70 maintains its high light transmission of 91%, even after storage for 40 days at 150 °C. It also maintains its brilliant appearance and does not exhibit any undesired light diffusion due to material haze after exposure to such conditions. ACRYMID® TT70 has excellent UV and weather resistance as well as high-surface hardness.

ACRYMID® TT70 is well suited for optical light guides, as the high-quality optical properties allow longer lengths to be utilized with limited loss of light transmission. It can also be used for lens systems, light-guiding elements for parking lights or dipped headlights and any other lighting design incorporating LEDs and Xenon lamps.

ACRYMID® TT70 molding compound can be processed on injection molding machines with standard 3-zone general purpose screws for thermoplastics. It is supplied in pellets of uniform size in aluminum-laminated 25 kg polyethylene bags.
